Reflection Paragraph on Sources

I used a wide variety of sources. All of my sources were written by doctors or therapists. All of my sources were used to answer my essential questions. They were very easy to be able to find the answers and such. All of my sources were very reliable, and legit. I had a few .com sources but they were only for definitions. Like I said, all of my sources are reliable and true.

Reflection Paragraph on Process

This was a long process with this blog. It was a challenge to keep up with the dates, and yes, I did get kinda behind on some of my posts but I got them done. It taught me how to keep up with things up to date, and how to use my sources. I learned to look up reliable sources and how to use a works cited and make them. I learned how to summarize without plagiarism and very useful web sites to look over my posts and grade them on a college scale and ways make them sound better. I learned more about assisted suicide which helped me see a different side of the medical field. Sometimes, just because things may sound good and convening but there is always a bad side to it. Like in the medical field, savings peoples life in the med field, but also taking life’s.
Wordle: Untitled

In this wordle, I used key terms to explain terms of assisted suicide. There were many terms that we associated with assisted suicide. The most common was PAS, Assisted, Death, And Suicide. So I did this wordle on the most common words used in the topic, assisted suicide.

Reflection Paragraph on Findings

In my findings paragraphs, I was able to find the answers to all of my essential questions, plus more! I learned even more about where assisted suicide was legal, and where it was not legal, why it wasn’t. I learned that assisted suicide is protected by the fourteenth amendment, so that makes it impossible to make it not legal, but as I read in an article, states cannot make it illegal, but it is possible to pass laws to make it illegal like putting laws against it. I learned why some states do not want it legal I their states. For one, they are afraid that it will put a bad image on their states. Names such as, the killing states, or the deathly states. As said in an article, sometimes in the state assisted suicide is highly supported at the beginning, but when it gets passed, it is not as highly thought of. So then the states try to get it from being a law, and they cannot. So all of findings paragraphs, I was able to answer my essential questions which was really good.

Finding Paragraph #3

Why illegal in some state, but legal in others? Well truth is, it actually is legal in all states. But states have bills and laws so make sure that it is literally impossible for doctors to perform assisted suicide. As said in my last finding paragraph post, assisted suicide is protected by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. “Just because a county has not defined its criminal code on this specific action does not mean all assisters will go free” (Derek Humphry). By this quote, it shows how it is legal in some states, but not legal in others because like I said, assisted suicide is legal in all states, but in some states where it is not legal; it’s actually bills and laws keeping doctors from performing this action.
Humphry, Derek. "Assisted Suicide Laws Around the World - Assisted Suicide." Assisted Suicide - Information on Right-to-die and Euthanasia Laws and History. Web. 06 Apr. 2011. .

Finding Paragraph #2

Is assisted suicide constitutional? Yes assisted suicide is constitutional by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment which regulates the flow of narcotics and the personal privacy. As stated from a article from public.findlaw.com “The right to receive assistance in committing suicide is a liberty protected by the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment” (Health-Care Law). So by this website, yes assisted suicide is constitutional as protected by the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment. But as I said in one of my recent posts, the federal government can stop assisted suicide by putting very strict restraints on it.
"Is There a Constitutional Right to Physician-assisted Suicide?- ABA Family Legal Guide." Find Your Legal Rights, Legal Information, Law for Common Legal Issues including Lawyers for Legal Advice or Legal Help to Your Legal Issues. American Bas Association. Web. 06 Apr. 2011. .
Why should assisted sucide not be legalized? Assisted suicide should not be legalized because in states where it is no legal, they are now regretting it being passed. Other states may frown upon their state and not come and visit that state because it can be known as the “killing” state. “Early polls showed strong support, before the general public was educated about the dangers of legalization” (Marilyn Golden). So this shows how with most states at the beginning, there is a lot of support, but by the time the actual passing of the bill, popularities goes down and the support is just not there anymore.
Golden, Marilyn. "Why Assisted Suicide Must Not Be Legalized." DREDF: Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund. Web. 06 Apr. 2011. .

Finding Paragraph #1

Assisted Suicide, is it murder, or is it not? There was a case where an older lady, Velma Howard age 76, who knew that her life was coming to an end. She had Lou Gehrig's disease, a disease is an incurable fatal neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness, resulting in paralysis. After a lot of thinking, and no signs of getting better, she decided on rational suicide. Rational Suicide is the concept that suicide is presumably a reasonable choice by a terminally ill person; also, the ending of one's life for considered reasons as opposed to emotional/psychological reasons. Assisted Suicide is only legal in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. After she committed suicide, her husband, which actually gave her the medication, was tried for murder. “This case doesn’t have anything to do with whether it’s right or wrong to commit suicide”, “It just happens to be illegal in Missouri to help somebody to do so” (Greg Bridges). So this website shows and example how assisted suicide is actually murder if assisted suicide is not legal in your state; even if assisted suicide is legal in your state, its only legal for a physician to do so if the patient is with in 6 months of dying.

"Assisted Suicide." Assisted Suicide - Information on Right-to-die and Euthanasia Laws and History. Euthanasia Research & Guidance Organization (ERGO). Web. 06 Apr. 2011. .

How can we actually stop assisted suicide? Its hard to stop assisted suicide in states that it is legal, but assisted suicide is easily stopped in states that it is not legal in. The Bush administration tried to stop Oregon to stop from being able to actually practice assisted suicide. The people of Oregon voted to pass Death with Dignity Act in 1994, but three years later they voted to appeal this law. “In 2001 an edict was issued that doctors who prescribed drugs that are used to commit suicide can be prosecuted under the federal controlled substance act” (John Ashcroft). By this quote from an attorney general, John Ashcroft, it became aware that there are ways to actually stop states where assisted suicide is legal and convict the doctors in those states that practice this.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #5

Quote:
“What you choose to believe is your business. What I choose to believe is my business. Let's make a deal. I'll mind my own business if you'll do the same. I won't hurt you. You promise not to hurt me. Then, and only then, can we say that we live in freedom.”

Summary:
Bob Stannard posted this quote saying how if you leave me alone I will mind my own business and everything will be okay. He is saying that if these organizations would just leave this people alone who support assisted suicide, maybe everything will be better. Also if you are in the United States, you should be able to decide what you do.

Source Analysis:
In this source it talks about how in Vermont there is a bill in the process where assisted suicide would be legal with the request from the patient. But that brings up a lot of controversy. What if the patient is in a coma and is not responsive? How are you supposed to get permission to do assisted suicide from the patient?

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #4

Quote:
“He pleaded to be put out of his misery. Matthew wanted to die now. His pleas went unanswered. Unable to ignore Matthew's repeated cry, I removed a .30 caliber pistol from his dresser drawer, walked to the hospital, and shot and killed my brother. I was tried for murder.”

Summary:
In this quote it talks about how a human wanted to die so bad that he actually experimented with x-rays. Matthew wanted to die. He did not want to be on this earth any longer than he had to. After Matthew experimented with x-rays, he lost his nose, his left hand, and two fingers on his right hand, he was blind, and part of his jaw. So after he pleaded so many times to his brother, Harold, his brother shot him with a .30 caliber gun and shot his brother. Harold was tried for murder.

Source Analysis: In this source, it talks about how the new types of medicine have actually helped people be taken out of their “misery”. It says that with the new advancements in medicine, doctors can give patients pills as a relaxer and a pain killer. Also how in California, they are trying to pass a act which would allow a doctor to end a patients life upon request.

This graph is saying “In some states, it’s legal for doctors to prescribe lethal doses of drugs that a terminally ill patient could use to commit suicide do you approve or disapprove of laws that let doctors assist patients who want to end their lives this way?”

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #3

Quote:
“If we were to legalize physician-assisted suicide in Vermont or New Hampshire or anywhere, tomorrow, the next day we would still have problems of medical education which would remain inadequate; with the treatment of pain, which would remain inadequate; with the use of advance directives, which would remain inadequate; with the lack of community support, … with the incredible short-staffing in our nursing homes and home health.”

Summary:
In this quote, it is saying that if physician assisted suicide were to become legal in all states, then the medical education would become inadequate; Meaning that with the medical field already being inadequate as it is, we don’t need to change the medical field. That would just add on to what the doctors already have to learn, and make it so much harder to get through medical school.

Source Analysis:
This source is very reliable. It has many different quotes from a wide variety of people. This is a organization so I know that the quotes are really and very reliable. There are not that many websites that shows as many quotes such as this so this website is very reliable.

This is a picture of one of the ways that the doctors perform assisted suicide. There is lethal injection, pulling the plug (only works if on life support), and consuming the lethal dosage of medicine. As you can see this is pill that a doctor would give the patient when performing PAS which is Physician Assisted Suicide. As I said in my other paragraphs PAS is legal in only 3 states, Washington, Montana, and Oregon.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis and Citatin #2

Quote: "Precisely in an age when the inviolable rights of the person are solemnly proclaimed and the value of life is publicly affirmed, the very right to life is being denied or trampled upon, especially at the more significant moments of existence: the moment birth and the moment of death." Evangelium Vitae- Gospel of Life Pope John Paul II- 1995

Summary: This quote is saying that for one assisted suicide is wrong. Every person should have the right to live a full life no mater what that persons age is. By assisted suicide being legalized in 3 states, this quote is saying that life is being denied or trampled upon. Saying this means that if assisted suicide is legalized in more states, the right to a full life could be limited. This quote also brings up the moment of birth and the moment of death. They are saying you should be born “naturally” and die “naturally”. By saying this, they are saying that doctors should not interfere in no way shape or form.

Source Analysis: This is a website perfectly made just for the purpose of anti-assisted suicide quotes. It has pure religious quotes from all religions: Catholic, Baptist, and other religions.

This paragraph shows what states assisted suicide is legal in, what states its not, and what states it is defiantly not legal in, and what states there are not any laws against it. Green states do not have laws that criminalize assisted suicide but classify it as a type of homicide or manslaughter, red states allow physician-assisted suicide, and blue states have criminalized assisted suicide by statue or common law.

Quote Summary, Source Analysis, Citation #1

My Quote:
“The right to a good death is a basic human freedom. The[2006-JAN] Supreme Court's decision to uphold aid in dying allows us to view and act on death as a dignified moral and godly choice for those suffering with terminal illnesses." John Shelby Spong, retired bishop of the Episcopal Church, USA.
Summary:
This quote represents the “plus” sides of Assisted Suicide. This quote says basically that a human should not suffer; humans should not have to go through a painful death. But it really depends on if you are religious or not. If you are highly religious, you don’t believe in assisted suicide, but if you are not religious, you believe in it. But either way, if you do not want to see your parents or grandparents or loved ones, you do not want to see them suffer. So you will do whatever it takes to make sure that you do not see them have to suffer.
Source Analysis:
This website shows many plus and negative sides. It shows the bills that actually passed PAS and where at. Also it gives quotes from people from both religious, non religious, and court. So this source really gives me all sides of this topic, plus and negative sides.

This picture shows how Germany made Assisted Suicide legal. This room they say would be where assisted sucide would be taken place. One case was when a daughter wanted her mother taken off of a feeding tube. She had been on a feeding tube and in a coma for 5 years. So she took it too court and they took her off of the feeding tube. It is said that the assisted sucide actually took place in a room like this one.

* This article was written by Claire Andre and Manuel Velasquez. Matthew Donnelly was a man who wanted to die. He started begging to experiment with X-Rays. Donnelly lost his nose, his left hand, two fingers on his right hand, and part of his jaw. He was left blind and left with excruciating pain. Donnelly wanted to die; he didn’t want to have to go through this any more. After all the pleas to the doctors to take him out of his misery, the doctors wouldn’t do anything about it. His brother, Harold, couldn’t ignore his brother’s pleas anymore. Harold had to do something, he couldn’t stand seeing his brother pleading and begging anymore. Harold did what Matthew wanted to do, Matthew wanted to die. Harold went home, got his .30 Caliber hand pistol and went to the hospital and shot his brother. Harold was latter charged with murder.

"Physician Aid-in-Dying: Ethical Topic in Medicine." UW Departments Web Server. Web. 28 Mar. 2011. .

* Clarence H. Braddock III, MD, MPH and Mark R. Tonelli, MD, MA wrote this. This article talks about the language of Assisted Suicide. There is PAD which is Physician aid-in-dying (PAD) refers to a practice in which a physician provides a competent, terminally ill patient with a prescription for a lethal dose of medication, upon the patient's request, which the patient intends to use to end his or her own life. Doctors use the root word of suicide and they use terms like “Self-Killing” and “Auto-Killing”. They do not want to be straight forward and be like we need to perform Assisted Suicide or you need to kill your self so they use those two terms. It is also asked if Physician Aid-In-Dying is the same as Euthanasia. In truths, no, Euthanasia is not the same as Physician Aid-In-Dying is not the same. Euthanasia is the use of lethal medications to deliberately end a patient's life. In PAD the doctor provides the patient with the medication but does not give the medication directly to the patient, but Euthanasia occurs when a third party administers medication or acts directly to end the patient’s life.

What I want to Learn!

By doing this project I want to know the different ways that the doctors actually administer the medication, and how they do assisted suicide. I want to know if they do it by a deadly injection like with prisoners on death road, or if they just pull the plug on some people. I want to know under what constitution it says that assisted suicide is illegal. I want to know if there have been doctors actually tried as murders for doing this action, assisted suicide. I want to learn how long it actually takes to get assisted suicide legalized in a state. For example how long did it take Washington, Oregon, and Montana to get it legalized in their states. I want to know what goes through the doctor’s mind whenever he is performing assisted suicide. Does the doctor feel that he is helping a family or is he actually killing someone?

What I Know!

I know that Assisted Suicide is legal in three (3) states; Montana, Oregon, and Washington. In 2007 there were attempts to make Assisted Suicide legal, but it failed to be passed in the legislature of Hawaii, Vermont and California. In the medical field they use terms such as “PAS”. PAS is the Physician-Assisted Suicide and is known as “Auto Killing” or “Self Killing”. PAS, Physician-Assisted Suicide is not the same as euthanasia. Both of these techniques both use the use of lethal medications to end a person’s life, but the difference is who actually ends the patient’s life. In PAS, the patient must self administer the medications. Euthanasia is when a “third party” administers medication or acts to end a person’s life, but Euthanasia is illegal in every state because euthanasia is murder because there is no just way to do it. There was a case where a brother killed his own brother because he wanted to be put out of his misery, well his brother killed him and is now being tried for murder.

Why I am Interested

I am interested in this because ever since I was in Public Speaking and we had to do a speech on Assisted Suicide, I have always been interest with this topic. I have always been interested in what goes through the doctors’ mind when he has to do this. But a question has always haunted me, whose life is it anyways, the doctors, your families, or yours?, Rodrigues P 1. What makes the doctor do this, the families desire to see a loved one not have to be in misery anymore, or the side of a greedy family member wanting the ill humans money? How can a human take a humans life without showing any emotion? Assisted Suicide has been a very controversial topic for the past many years, cases from the Supreme Court all the way from family members killing other family members. This is my blog, whose life is it anyways the doctors, your families, or yours?
